National CPR and AED Awareness Week
June 1st – 7th
Declared by U.S. Congress:
Ten years ago, educating people on CPR and AEDs was important enough for Congress to pass the resolution unanimously and here’s why; According to the AHA (American Heart Association), cardiac arrest – a malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat called arrhythmia and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs – is a leading cause of death in the U.S. In fact, more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur annually.
It’s been a decade since Congress passed the resolution to set aside June 1-7 each year as “National CPR and AED Awareness Week. The week puts a spotlight on how more lives can be saved if Americans learn simple CPR techniques and how to use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). The week also encourages states and municipalities to make AEDs more publicly accessible.
OK by now you know from reading our blogs that one of the reasons
cardiac arrest is the biggest killer in the U.S. is because it happens
suddenly and typically outside of the hospital where simple and immediate
CPR techniques aren’t implemented.
That’s right SIMPLE techniques that are easy and fun(at least with us) to learn! The thought of giving mouth-to-mouth to a coworker may not be what you signed up for, but it’s no longer necessary. Hands-Only CPR may help save lives until paramedics arrive, and it doesn’t involve mouth-to-mouth. There are only two steps; if you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of any tune that is 100 to 120 beats per minute.
Don’t be the majority of bystanders that feel helpless and worry that their efforts may actually make the situation worse. The fact is, CPR, especially if performed in the first few minutes of cardiac arrest, can increase a person’s chance of survival by two or even three times.
