Healthy Heart Eating
Even though I’m kinda over the many diet options going around, in honor of February-Heart-Month, I must give a shout out to the Mediterranean “Diet” because it’s not a diet at all! It’s the ultimate heart-healthy eating style, evolved over centuries by people living in countries off of, you guessed it, the Mediterranean Sea. We’re talking the bucket-list countries like Italy, Greece, Croatia, … (reservations please!). In fact, Italy and Greece each have a city on the Blue-Zone list. The Blue-Zone list is the top 10 places with the highest concentration of centenarians, those who live to 100 and older.

Following are some of the reasons to love the Mediterranean “eating style” … in no particular order LOL!
According to a study in JAMA Dec 2018, it’s linked to 25% lower risk of Heart Disease
The Mediterranean menu is so well rounded it allows for low to moderate amounts of red wine! (optional of course)*
Not only does it reduce cardiovascular deaths and lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, it’s also linked to lower risk of breast cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease*
This menu helps protect people with or at risk of type 2 diabetes by improving blood sugar control*
The Mediterranean menu is low in red meat, processed foods, sugar and certain dairy while it’s full of fresh fruit, veggies, olive oil, fish, nuts, whole grains and legumes. As always, the more vibrant the colors on your plate, the more likely you’re on the right track to centenarianhood!
