February is Heart Month!
Cardiovascular – related deaths are on the rise over the Pandemic year according to a January 2021 study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. JAMA Cardiology confirmed the same news in an Aug 2020 published study noting that heart attack deaths have been 2.4 times more likely since the coronavirus outbreak.
WHY? Well, the authors of these studies conclude that it’s because many people are not going to the hospital when they feel heart symptoms for fear of virus exposure.
To be clear, early action and intervention is critical for heart attack victims. Certainly in this case, the benefit does not outweigh the risk of not calling 911 and possibly being admitted to the hospital. Many people also have an attitude of not wanting to be a burden to their loved ones or the health system.

Here are some of the most common warning signs to look out for and take action on, i.e. call 911
- Chest pain or discomfort lasting more than a few minutes
- Pain in the arms, upper back, neck or jaw
- Abdominal pain or feeling of heartburn
- Cold sweats or clammy skin
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Shortness of breath
- Unusual fatigue or nausea
For most of us, this pandemic year has brought on unexpected stressors that may contribute to poor life choices. I know I’ve eaten more sugar and fatty “comfort” foods, decreased exercise, and ignored the toll that less socializing has taken on me. These poor life choices can only fuel other unwanted physical ailments. Let’s stay mindful of the long-term goal of a healthier 2021. As we slowly get back to some normalcy in our lives, remember to stay on top of your health and in turn your heart health.
